I used to dance to this music in NYC 8 years ago. On the 3rd floor of a Japanese restaurant at the corner of 42nd street and 2nd avenue, there was a party space, owned by a Japanese guy / owner of the restaurant / part-time DJ. Second floor was a bar/ Karaoke place, where I also used to hang out. Man, my boyfriend at that time was working at that restaurant, and we were "it" people, not only in that area, but also among Japanese locals and community in Manhattan/Queens/Brooklyn.
