End the Death Penalty 

 わたしは「死刑」に反対です。 

1988年にクリスチャンとしての洗礼を受けてからその思いが強くなったのは事実ですが、もっとずっと昔から、「人が人を裁く」ことに違和感を感じていました。 

そんなわたしでも一瞬、「死刑」が頭をよぎったことがありました。それは・・・

元彼が交通事故で亡くなった時。
義弟が仕事を苦に自殺した時。

でも、今は加害者への報復とか「死刑」とか、そんなことは望んでいません。 

時がたち、傷が癒え、亡くなった人（たち）への思いは消えることはありませんが、加害者の「死刑」を望むキモチは薄れていくのです。そして、加害者にも「家族」がいるということを思い出す余裕が生まれるのです。もしも彼らが加害者を失ってしまったら・・・私達が受けたように傷つき、長年、悲しみ苦しむのだということを想像すると、自分たちの受けた痛みの大きさを考えると、そんなことを他の誰かに経験してほしくないと思うのです。

一瞬よぎった「死刑」が、もしもあの頃、現実になっていたとしたら、わたしは今頃、どんなキモチになっていたでしょう？

さて、今年の国連総会で「死刑執行停止決議」が採択されるそうです。

さっそく、国連加盟国に決議への賛成を要請しましたよ。会員でも、会員じゃなくてもできますので、もし賛同していただけるのなら、ぜひ今から締め切りの2012年10月30日（火）までに、こちらからアクションを起こしてくださいね。

Dear Minister,

I am writing to urge the authorities of your country to vote in favour of the forthcoming resolution calling for a moratorium on the use of the death penalty, which will be introduced at the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly in October 2012.

When the United Nations was created in 1945, only eight countries had abolished the death penalty for all crimes. The trend towards worldwide abolition of the death penalty is today unmistakable with 140 countries that are abolitionist in law or practice.

The adoption, in 2007, 2008 and 2010 of UN General Assembly resolutions 62/149, 63/168 and 65/206, calling for a moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty, unequivocally reaffirmed the commitment of the UN towards abolition of capital punishment and generated a momentum in all regions of the world towards ending the use of this cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment.

It is my hope that your country will join the majority of UN Member States and vote in favour of the fourth UN General Assembly resolution on a moratorium on the use of the death penalty, as I strongly believe a positive vote at the General Assembly would put the country at the forefront of the fight against the death penalty internationally.
